Initially, Doordarshan did not agree to broadcast the Ramayana serial, but when the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi got the information about Ramanand Sagar’s project, he immediately ordered Doordarshan to broadcast the Ramayana serial.
Due to the Ramayana serial there was a race to purchase color television sets in India. According to a report, after the start of the Ramayana serial, about 4 crore television sets were sold.
