So far 2 television serials have been made based on the Hindu epic Mahabharata. For the first time Mahabharata serial was produced by B R Chopra in 1988 which was telecast on Doordarshan. For the second time, the Mahabharata serial was produced by Swastik Productions, which was broadcast on Star Plus channel from 16 September 2013 to 16 August 2014. If seen from the point of view of popularity, Mahabharata produced by BR Chopra was a big hit.
Now Aditya Chopra, nephew of BR Chopra has decided to remake the Mahabharata serial. Although Aditya Chopra’s company Yash Raj Films has so far produced only films. But seeing the decreasing trend of the audience towards films and the increasing craze of TV serials, Yash Raj Films has decided to make Mahabharata serial.
It is reported that for the production of this serial, Yash Raj Films has tied up with Sony Network for satellite broadcast and Prime Video for digital broadcast. Plans are afoot to cast many stars of Bollywood and South Indian films in this serial, which is to be made at a cost of about Rs. 1000 crores.
